Science is Fun
1. a branch of knowledge or study dealing with a body of facts or truths systematically arranged and showing the operation of general laws.
2. systematic knowledge of the physical or material world gained through observation and experimentation.
That’s all that is really relevant from the definition provided by dictionary.com. My view of science is somewhat stricter than that. It involves experimentation, reports, peer reviewed journals, etc. To me, Science isn’t the knowledge itself, it is the system that we use to acquire and confirm that knowledge. I think it’s more like the Wikipedia page. It’s actually awesome that Wikipedia confirms what I just said within the first paragraph! It’s not my original idea though.
Anyhow, the goal of this blog is to be somewhat scientific. I’m an engineer. Engineers take the knowledge acquired through science and apply it to the real world. I keep trying to engineer things like skates. I have these curiosities that can’t be ignored until I’ve spent hours looking for the answers. Perhaps the purpose of this blog is to have a record of the time I’ve spent just trying to answer the questions I ask myself. I need evidence that I didn’t waste my time. Also, I hope someone can be entertained and glad that I shared it.
I think the scope of this blog includes skates and their parts and pieces, strategy, fitness, techniques, stats etc. Really it could be any aspect of Roller Derby that can be backed up by evidence. Or maybe I should say “evidence”, emphasis on the quotes. Recently I’ve been looking to buy skates, and so plates or wheels might be a good place to start.
